Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Ian Cowley, the Marketing Manager at SHERPA about SHERPA
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
What if information came to us instead of having to look for it? Wouldn't it be wonderful to find, amidst the enormity of the Internet, information that has been selected based on our interests and delivered to us in a visual format? Search is what you do when you're looking for something. Discovery is when something wonderful that you didn't know existed, or didn't know how to ask for, finds you. This is what we aim to achieve with SHERPA.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
As well as the aforementioned roll out to other platforms, we continue to work on the Artificial Intelligence engine making it smarter and able to predict information better. Amongst other features, we will also make new content available in the app such as new sports including cricket, rugby, tennis and golf complete with scores, standings, and videos, with more sports to come. Daily Breakdowns (Voice Recommendations) will also be made available. SHERPA will provide a spoken summary of the day's information from each of the topics that interest the user.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
Using the app personally and seeing how useful it is for me as I go about my daily life. For example, it tells me about my commute to work, traffic, weather, timings etc. without me having to interact with the app. I can also see events nearby which I'd like to attend, based on my likes. It will also tell me about upcoming shows on TV that I might not have discovered had it not been for SHERPA.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
The predictive AI engine which allows SHERPA to filter down the immense amount of data available on the Internet and extracts the most relevant information for each unique user.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
It always surprises me that SHERPA is able to offer so much more relevant information - and in a better format – than some of our bigger competitors.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
Have patience, get the product right, continually evolve it and listen to your users.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
We released SHERPA initially on Android because of the larger user base, before launching an iOS version. SHERPA is now cross platform and the brain behind devices such as smart TVs, home speaker devices, smart cars, wearables etc. The home speaker market continues to grow and is an excellent fit for our product
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
SHERPA'S powerful Artificial Intelligence algorithms are based on probabilistic models in order to predict the information users are going to need. SHERPA's algorithms dramatically improve accuracy of AI predictions, making it one of the most powerful and intuitive Machine Learning systems for data prediction. As well as being available in English, SHERPA is also available in the Spanish language, unlike the other personal assistant apps on the market.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
The ability to be able to talk naturally to a device and for it to be able to respond to your requirements has always been something that's been viewed as science fiction. For example, Iron Man's Jarvis or HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, more than ever with software like SHERPA, this kind of technology is becoming a reality.
