ABCmouse Mastering Math is an innovative, game-based adaptive early learning app that helps preschool through kindergarten children build a strong understanding of the most fundamental math concepts: number sequences, numeral recognition, and counting objects. Having that foundation is a key requirement for success in kindergarten and beyond. The app uses appealing characters and personalized learning pathways to help children achieve mastery through practice. The Mastering Math app leverages the Personalized Mastery Learning System developed by Age of Learning, Inc. This adaptive learning platform recommends and customizes learning games to deliver an individualized learning path and personalized education to every child. The app actively adapts in real time to a child’s existing knowledge, filling in gaps in understanding and teaching new material as the child demonstrates they are ready for more advanced learning activities. Using data from a child’s interaction, the system adapts the sequence of activities presented, and even adapts within each activity, to optimize each child’s learning experience and ultimately help all children achieve math mastery.
For example, if a child is struggling, we provide formative feedback and scaffolding to supplement instruction and correct misconceptions. On the other hand, if a child is excelling, the game gets harder as we move them ahead to more challenging material. Students can take a variety of pathways to reach mastery, but regardless of the path they take, all students end up mastering the material and progressing to the next set of math skills.
We have conducted four research and correlation studies with more than 1,000 students to evaluate the efficacy of Mastering Math and preliminary findings are strong. Mastering Math provides the kind of high quality, personalized instruction a child would receive from a 1:1 tutor, but delivered at scale in an engaging game environment.
Our game development process is extremely kid-focused and involves continuous user testing with children to gain insights. Mastering Math was designed to be delightful, fun, and engaging because we think learning should be fun and know that children do their best learning when they are motivated and engaged. Mastering Math’s combination of learning science, adaptive technology, world-class curriculum, and highly-polished production values help make learning math an enjoyable experience for young children. Other products offer some components of that equation such as adaptive technology that recommends quiz questions, or a polished game with limited curricular efficacy, but nothing we’ve seen provides as complete a package as our Personalized Mastery Learning System and Mastering Math app.
