Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Angie Durbin, the CEO at Deposit Defender LLC about Deposit Defender

Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.

I own a property management company in San Diego and last year one of our clients decided to sell his home, his current renter had lived in the house for six years and we had only managed the property for five years, so we did not move this tenant into the home and were unable to document the condition of the home at the time of move in, the tenant told us he didn't remember doing a walk thru with the previous property manager, so we had to rely on the owners assertions that his home even though 20+ years old was in absolutely pristine condition when the tenant moved in, so we were unable to provide a fair and honest accounting of the tenants security deposit and the tenant ended up owing thousands of dollars above his security deposit, all of that could have been avoided if the tenant had done his own walk thru and documented the condition of the home at the time he moved in.

What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?

We would like to make Deposit Defender available in multiple languages to make it easier for users whose first language is not English.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?

Deposit Defender was really created to help landlords and tenants by making sure everyone is honest about the condition of the home at the time of move in, which should mean fewer arguments at the time of move out, which means fewer security deposit disputes showing up in court, which is a win-win for everyone involved.

What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?

I have taken my 20+ years of property management experience and filled Deposit Defender with tips on exactly what the user should be looking for while they complete each section of the inspection.

What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?

Honestly, there is so much more to do in creating and launching an app than I ever imagined, but I believe that it will all be worth it if landlords and tenants can stop fighting over security deposits, I know it will make my job as a property manager easier.

Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?

Having grown up in the 80's and with a TRS-80 computer I am amazed by every bit of technology that has come since then.

Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?

Start the work of getting the news out about your app as soon as you can, do not wait until you have a completed app to come up with a plan.

How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?

We released Deposit Defender for both Apple and Google because we wanted to reach the highest amount of users, if we find there is enough interest we would be happy to release Deposit Defender on all platforms.

How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?

Deposit Defender is the only app on the market that is designed to provide a tenant, landlord, or property manager with the ability to fully document the condition of the rental home with photos and notes without paying thousands of dollars a month for expensive property management software.
