Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Tracey Scanlon , the Director of Operations at Koobe about Kabang

Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.

Kabang was created to add personality back into the social experience! Our team was focused on creating a fun, judge free platform that takes the pressure off of creating the "perfect" post, and giving millennials a tool to connect in goofier, funnier ways. We achieved this goal by adding sounds to photos and GIFS -- it's the perfect mix between a photo and video!

What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?

Oh, good question. I won't give too much detail, but I will say that we're putting an interesting spin on video and live streaming :)

How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?

We originally decided to launch on iOS because the engagement levels of iPhone users was found to be higher than that of the Android users. However, given Android's market share, our plan was to roll out the Android version of Kabang quickly after the iOS launch (it's coming soon!).

How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?

Voice & Sound! In current social media people can only post a photo or video, and can only comment with text. Kabang let's friends combine photos and videos by adding sound over top of a photo or GIF. That sound can be their favorite song, their own voice (with voice modifiers), or a sound byte from their favorite YouTube or movie. Friends can also then comment on posts in the same way! Just think of hearing your friends voices as they comment about a tbt picture taken 5 years ago -- it's actually hilarious!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?

Seeing people post freely on the app, and listening to hysterical conversations -- it shows people are using Kabang for its intended use! Also, seeing people create and share posts on other social media has been really cool; knowing that we are able to enhance existing social media through our innovation has been really rewarding.

What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?

Definitely the ability to add sounds to GIFs! GIFs are already God's gift to Earth so to be able to add sound just makes them so much better! Just envision Beyonce dancing to Damn Daniel's remix soundtrack, or a taco getting down to Drake's newest track. The possibilities are endless.

What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?

How important marketing is in the process! You can design a beautiful app with an incredible UX/UI, but if your target audience doesn't know about the app, then the app won't get used. Luckily, we have an incredible marketing team (all three of them!) who have done an excellent job of driving people to download the app.

Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?

Airbnb's mobile app is an inspiration because it has such an incredible user experience. The app is very intuitive, and allows you to accomplish your goals effortlessly.

Vine is a second app that was very inspiring due to its entertaining nature. So by taking the great UX of Airbnb and marrying it with Vine's fun factor we were able to create Kabang!

Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?

Yes! Have a very clear vision of the problem you're solving and how you intend to solve it before you even write one line of code or mock up any designs. Once that is outlined, validate, validate, validate! You only have to talk to between 5-10 potential users to ensure your app will have a future. After you take that step you are good to build that beautiful app you have been dreaming of!
