Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Bill Mastin, the Founder at Learnie about Learnie

Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.

This journey to create Learnie actually started a number of years ago as I ran a computer lab at Park Elementary in Baton Rouge under an Americorps program. Seeing the students learning in different ways and how technology helped personalize the learning was inspiring.

Jump ahead to 2020 and having children of my own having to distance learn during the pandemic got me finally to the point to launch Learnie. For businesses, organizations, schools, teams, students, teachers, tutors and anyone that wants to share or learn. Our hope is this helps someone access some learning that makes a difference in their world.

What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?

What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?

Seeing users start to create courses and organizations start to think in an entirely new way of creating learning communities.

What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?

User-generated microlearning courses that allow for community learning to happen. Harness the power of the crowd with Learnie and use the Cohort feature to organize courses and people for your organization, business or topic.

What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?

I've built many apps, but the response from people about Learnie has been overwhelming. I think that surprised me the most.

Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?

Here were the inspirations behind Learnie:

Super fast video and social creation - TikTok easy

User-generated content & Community learning

Mobile first + Web - Android and Apple app stores.

Generation Z & Millennial learning styles

PechaKucha

Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?

Build for the love of building. You won't always know what will work and what won't, so be as proud about the creation you make that only you download, as the app that 1M people love. Enjoy the creation process and continue to learn and play with ideas. Software is infinite possibility, enjoy that.

How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?

iOS and Android were musts platforms for us. We wanted a fully mobile experience. We also wanted to give the option to consume, but not create, content on the web, so we built Learnie.app for the web version. We are looking at other platforms or ways to consume content next, but because we have a web version you can even watch a Learnie in browser on Oculus which is super cool.

How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?

Learnie is a complete paradigm shift in how to think about learning systems. It fuels community learning. It is the way to create and share engaging user-generated video courses. Courses are user-generated and built in a series of up to 30 second microlearning bursts. Everyone can share their unique skills or knowledge in Learnie. Let your people, students, customers or teams capture and share their expertise. Learnie is untethered, on-demand, collaborative, and empowering. Learnie is truly mobile first but also has a web version for those still on a browser.
