Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Pete Mastin, the CEO at Learnie about Learnie
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
Learnie was created with a mission to democratize and decentralize learning through a mobile community microlearning platform. We saw employees, students and organizations not having a platform where people can learn together and fixed that with Learnie. Learning creation is as easy as TikTok in Learnie.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
More more more! We are rolling out new versions of the app every couple weeks. Our latest features include:
- Marketing landing pages
- Approval workflow
- Community wide notifications
- Community chat
- QR Codes (Learnie & Community)
- Web version Learnie tool
- Phone authentication
and Badges.
Next up are more features to help our Learnie Pay$ customers create and monetize their communities. Later in the year we plan to roll out a full marketplace where people can monetize specific Learnie's as well as their community.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
Seeing the adoption and people starting to use it. Most importantly, we are helping creators start small businesses and sell their knowledge and earn their share with Learnie Pay$. Helping people actually monetize their knowledge and community in Learnie has been extremely rewarding. Seeing small businesses increase productivity and reduce costs has also been very rewarding. Making it super easy for organizations to license the product and capture the knowledge of their teams has been amazing.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
Community learning is at the core of Learnie. The ease of creating learning is the most important innovation we have created. However there are so many more controls that allow the owner of manger of a community to really curate and manage the members that are participating. There are approval workflows, notifications, xAPI integrations, curriculums and even the ability to embed learning other places with a simple embed code.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
How amazing and dedicated our founding team is to our mission. They are absolutely passionate and everyone has a deep belief in the company. Learnie is a certified Bcorp and not only are we seeking to be profitable but we are helping non-profits in their missions by donating the platform.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
We drew inspiration from a number of places but there is no doubt that TikTok was one of those. Slack and Teachable were other influences that helped create the mobile app and platform.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
Start creating and learn to enjoy the process. It really is about the journey and not the destination. Find an idea you are passionate about and keep going. It may take time for you to find the right space and product but most important is that you learn to enjoy the creation process so you get to have fun along the way.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
Today we support iOS and Android on both mobile devices and tablets. We also have a full featured web version so that people can manage and admin their community. We have a vision of releasing our app across other platforms as well in the next 12 months.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
Learnie has 3 products on the same community learning mobile app. Learnie for everyone is a free app where anyone can share and create and learn. Learnie for Business is where small businesses can buy a learning platform with a simple in-app purchase with analytics, transcripts, reporting, branding and much more. Learnie Pay$ where creators and organizations can sell access to their community and earn up to 85% of proceeds in a monthly subscription to their Learnie community. Learnie is a network of communities that are free or up for subscription and businesses can even create their own internal communities for their organization.
