Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Daniel Ori, the Artistic Director at The Melody Book about Look, I'm Making it Up!
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
A few years ago, I had an idea for a story about a quirky, out of the box thinking kid who likes to do things in his own original way. He loves to play music, dance, build, bake and paint, but puts a personal stamp on everything he does.
When he hears distant sounds of jazz music coming from the park, his mom takes him there to listen and he learns a new word from the musicians, IMPROVISATION. He quickly realizes that he has been an improviser all along ; )
I was hoping a story like this would help to encourage a sense of creativity and improvisation in people from an early age. It's such an important skill to have, regardless of what you do in life. I could go on and on here about how crucial improvisation is but I think you would agree, right??
We're super excited to officially release a story app called " Look, I'm Making it Up!" featuring interactive educational games and amazing artwork by Rona Mor. Dana Morgan is the creator/developer and designer of this app.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
We hope to add more interactive improvisational games to "Look, I'm Making it Up!".
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
We really enjoyed seeing Camilo (the main character) come to life with beautiful animation and sounds.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
The coolest features of "Look, I'm Making it Up!" are the three games - cookie making, piano improvising and costume building. They are fun to experiment with, as they encourage kid users to improvise and create.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
It is always an amazing surprise to see how many changes and reiterations an app goes through from the moment of conception until the official release. "Look, I'm Making it Up!" went through so many changes on its way to becoming what it is today.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
We've been inspired by so many great app companies throughout our development process. Too many to name here. We look at animation, illustrations, user experience, originality, educational content and general creativity as we look to get inspired. There is so much to learn from on the app store.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
It's hard, but do your research and aim to make an app that brings something new to the app store.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
We have always been Apple app developers, and so we are available solely for iOS devices (iPhones/iPads). In addition, "Look, I'm Making it Up!" is available as an ebook on iBooks, and will soon be released on Amazon for Kindle devices.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
The app store is flooded with kids apps and games that have no added value except short entertainment..
"Look, I'm Making it Up!" is a safe and educational introduction to the topic of improvisation.
We wanted to encourage early development of open mindedness, imagination and the ability to improvise, realizing that these skills will set our children on a road to success in tomorrow's world.
