Recently we had an opportunity to speak with David Newhoff, the Chief Product Officer at Mixbook about Mixbook
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
At Mixbook, we’ve always believed that memories deserve more than a place to sit in a camera roll. They help us understand our lives and stay connected to the people we care about. As more of our lives moved to our phones, we saw an opportunity to bring the creative storytelling experience people loved on desktop into a mobile format. The challenge was making something powerful feel simple. Our goal was to make creative storytelling feel easy and natural on the device people use every day. We wanted the experience of revisiting your memories—and turning them into something meaningful—to feel as effortless as capturing them.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
Most photo apps focus on storage, quick sharing or automated creation without authorship. We approach it from a storytelling perspective. The Mixbook app is designed to make creative storytelling easy on mobile. It brings the core capabilities of Mixbook Studio to your phone so people can transform everyday photos into thoughtfully designed stories without needing design expertise or a complicated workflow. It helps close the gap between capturing a moment and giving it lasting meaning—so creating something beautiful from your photos feels simple, personal, and creatively rewarding.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
One of the most exciting features in the app is Memories, which helps people make sense of the thousands of photos we all carry on our phones. With a single tap, the app organizes photos into curated collections and highlights the images that best capture a moment. It acts like a personal photo curator, surfacing meaningful stories already hiding in your camera roll. Instead of endlessly scrolling through photos, people can quickly rediscover moments that matter and turn them into something lasting.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
The most rewarding part has been seeing how reducing friction in the creative process unlocks people’s desire to tell their stories. Over the past few years, we’ve introduced AI-powered features that help people move past the blank-page problem and start with a thoughtful first draft. That shift has made the experience faster and more approachable, while still giving people the creative control to make the story their own. When people realize they can go from a phone full of photos to something beautifully designed in minutes, it often reignites their excitement about preserving their memories.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
One thing that stood out during development was how much emotional value people attach to rediscovering their photos. We expected people to appreciate the convenience of creating on mobile, but what resonated most was the experience of reconnecting with moments they had forgotten about. When the technology works well, it fades into the background and simply helps people revisit meaningful parts of their lives. That reminder—that the product is really about human connection—continues to guide how we build.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
When we looked at how our customers engage with their photos, it was clear that a large portion of that activity was happening on iOS devices. Launching in the Apple App Store allowed us to meet people where they were already capturing and managing their memories. Our focus has been on delivering a thoughtful, high-quality experience first, and then expanding from there as we continue to evolve the product.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
We often look outside our category for inspiration. Some of the most thoughtful apps today focus on helping people live more intentional lives—whether that’s through wellness, communication, or staying connected to the people who matter most. The best apps in those spaces do something subtle but powerful: they remove friction and make meaningful moments easier to experience. They help people pause, reflect, reconnect, or share something personal with someone they care about. That philosophy resonates with us. Technology shouldn’t just store more content—it should help people stay connected to their memories, their stories, and the relationships that give those moments meaning.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
We see the app continuing to evolve as more than just a creation tool. The opportunity is to help people rediscover the moments that matter and make sense of the thousands of photos sitting in their camera rolls.Over time, we want the experience to feel more like a thoughtful companion for your memories—surfacing meaningful moments, helping you reflect on them, and making it easy to turn them into something you can share with the people who were part of those stories. Ultimately, the goal is to help people stay connected to the moments and relationships that shape their lives, and to make memory-keeping feel like a natural part of living a full life.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
Start with a clear vision of the human problem you’re trying to solve. Technology can easily become complicated, but the best products make life simpler and more meaningful for the people using them. For us, that means remembering that we’re not just building tools—we’re helping people capture and share the moments that define their lives. When a team stays aligned around that kind of purpose, it becomes much easier to make the right product decisions along the way.
