Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Xander Black , the Director at Good Knight Studios about My Naughty Shadow

What is your favorite mobile app to date and which have inspired you?

We love games and our team especially love playing Letterpress. In terms of this particular app though, the biggest inspiration would have to be the great apps from Toca Boca and Fox and Sheep.

What was your main objective or motivation for creating your mobile app?

We wanted to create a bedtime story which had simple interactations on each page which would progress the story, give kids practice with tablet gestures and still had the educational benefits of story in rhyming verse. Further more we wanted a story with female appeal without delving into the princess territory. A story with a heroine which appealed to both boys and girls. But most of all we wanted to create a classic... a children's book which could be remembered as fondly by today's generation as the Hungry Caterpillar or Seuss books have been remembered by previous generations.

What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?

Multiple languages... I'd love to see a version with french, german, dutch, mandarin and maybe a few others.

What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?

Well being a toddler app, there are no technology innovations, but there are a few innovations in the way we encourage infants to engage with the story. To take an active role in progressing it forward. But the main feature would have to be the beautiful illustration and animations.

Could you share a challenging factor of the development or marketing process?

Development has been relatively easy compared to trying to get the word out there. Becoming known to parents as being an entertainment/educational provider to young kids has been and will continue to be a challenging task. Advertising is not cost effective so we'll probably continue with social and PR activity.

Do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms as well?

Possibly Android.

If you could describe your app in ONE word, what would it be and why?

Cheeky. Its a cheeky story about a cheeky shadow which doesn't do everything its meant to.

Were there any unexpected surprises post-release of your app?

Only one. We had not optimised our search terms properly within iTunes guidelines so had to create a new release to adjust.
