Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Clément Davin, the Digital Marketing Manager at NearMinder about NearMinder
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
NearMinder's CEO is a business man. Like most salesperson, he's very busy and spend a lot of time in in traveling for business, going from a meeting to another… Two years ago, after a meeting with a business partner, he realized he had forgot to fulfill a task: handing an important document over. The idea of an app to get reminders of things to do when meeting people or being at specific locations and get notified when these locations or people are nearby came out. NearMinder was born.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
Having received a lot of feedbacks and reviews from our userbase, we have come to realize that NearMinder has helped thousands of people save their time and free their mind from their usual to-do list. Participating in the creation of such an impactful tool for such a big community is for us the best source of inspiration, and the best reward we could hope for.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
Definitively the contact NearMinder. More than receiving geo-reminders based on your proximity to places, same action can also be done with people! After having added the contact to the app and having created a NearMinder, you will receive a set of three notifications as soon as the contact is approaching your location.
The first one comes when the contact enters the radius you've previously set. The second one is shown when you're meeting this contact. Finally, you will receive the third notification if you're leaving the contact but still haven't fulfilled your reminder.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
After leading a market research, we found out that in between all the productivity app you can find on the market, NearMinder was the only one allowing to create contact reminders. And even more, in launching the first app release we met the interest of a very strong community. Wishing to build a strong relationship with those new coming users, we are showing a particular attention to keep on listening to our community and updating NearMinder to serve it as good as we can.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
My first recommendation is to make sure that you're surrounded by a strong engineering team, with good knowledge of the latest trends and technologies in IT, machine learning for instance. Then listen very carefully to your customer needs and to the reasons that would motivate them to download your app and keep it at their main productivity tool. Also, adapt your new releases according to their feedbacks. Finally, focus on user interface, design and user experience; users will tend to use your app for a longer duration if they fill like the creator have tried the best to make them enjoy the best app experience possible.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
Having such an important number of Android users wishing to download NearMinder made obvious the necessity to release the app in the Play Store first. After 9 months of success on Google Play, our developers team is currently working on plans to roll-out NearMinder to the App Store in the short run.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
Many productivity apps like Any.do, Todoist, Remember the milk, or Google Keep offer location-based reminders to get notified at the good time and location but none of them allow people to get reminded of their tasks with the people that are linked to it. NearMinder is the only app having this feature, and that is the reason why so many users have downloaded the app.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
Our team of engineers really spent a lot of time analyzing and testing modern machine learning and computation techniques to create a very effective and secured reminder management system. In this sense, I can say that latest researches from all the big IT institutes around the world have been a strong inspiration for us.
Also, we really dived into how people were using the tremendous number of time-base reminder apps and sought the best way to truly answer our users' needs: getting geo-reminded according to place and people location.
