Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Jessika Gouveia, the Head of Design at Got It about PhotoStudy
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
I was looking for a Math tutor for my daughter, and it was quite harder than I thought it would be. Living in Taiwan and looking for someone with good english and Math knowledge proved to be difficult. On my search I came across Got It, after I tried the app I was surprised with the fast response and accessibility to Math tutors, anytime and anywhere. The concept of the app was wonderful but the UI/UX needed some work, I was glad to see that the company was looking for a Designer so I applied and soon started working on improving the experience for thousands of students.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
We are currently available for english speaking countries only, hopefully we can expand and reach more students around the world in the future, we will continue to focus on the US education and try to reach more Schools out there, offering different programs and instant access to tutors.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
I am glad to be part of a product that has been helping kids all over the country, specially students from TRiO programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. I had a lot of fun creating a sustainable and functional designs for both User and Expert, Integrating AI and photo recognition software to maximize accessibility to Math and Science help. As a result 89% of students reported high levels of grade improvement.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
Expert and human connection is still the main feature of this app, but the bot option provides more options to the different user personas, making it accessible for students with no access to digital payment. You'll be matched with a live, quality Expert ready to help solve your problem, and get detailed step-by-step chat explanations help you learn what you need to know!
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
I didn't know the ramifications of working in this app, or how many students we would reach and help, from day to day homework to improving grades for college, creating opportunities for students out there. It has been truly rewarding to hear the testimonials and read about how PhotoStudy helped users achieve their goals.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
I researched a lot of apps, but didn't find anything close to this immediate connection tutor service. Popular apps amongst young people where my inspiration, but they didn't fulfill the right purpose so I had to rely a lot on user research.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
User research is essential, dive into creating user personas and go deeper into designing the user psychology, always interview a number of existing users and find focus groups to gather information about new users. Iteration is very important in the process of creating an app. Really knowing your users is the best way to go.
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
Phone app was the obvious choice for our audience, but later realized that we could reach more users with a web platform, for those users that only had access to school computers it was a game changer, collaborating with Schools, Colleges and Universities we were able to reach more students across the US and provide them with the accessibility that they needed.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
