Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Dongyeon Lee, the CEO at Sellege Inc about Sellege
Please share with us the backstory of what motivated you to create this app.
When I returned to college in the US after serving military time to satisfy required civic duty in South Korea, I realized that I needed furniture, textbooks, and other things. I had my budget and did not want to buy everything in new conditions. When I was looking for used products, there were no platforms that provided a trustworthy and organized marketplace for US college students. I realized that it would be great for college students to have a safe space where we can buy and sell things that we no longer need. Then, I got to work right away and created Sellege.
What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?
As Sellege grows, we are considering adding more localized features, hopefully providing a platform that can more directly aid college lives.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of the creation of this app?
It was most rewarding when we saw how active the platform was for a variety of schools. While witnessing the users recognize the platform's value, it was exciting to see students feel comfortable with purchasing and listing different items that can be of use to other people at a reasonable price. On top of the marketplace itself, we also saw some users giving advice to each other regarding the classes at their respective schools. Recognizing that Sellege became a community platform where everyone is comfortable communicating to each other was very rewarding.
What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?
This is hard to choose as there are countless cool and innovative features on Sellege. If I had to choose one, one (unexpected) feature would be that users do not have to repost the product if they are not being sold. When users want to update their products and bring them up to the feed so that other users can see on their homepage, all they have to do is press the "Bring up to the feed" button on their 'Sell' page in their profile. This will update the product so that it looks like a product post that was just posted a second ago.
What surprised you most in your journey to create this app?
We were surprised by the number of students who felt the same need. Talking to students from various colleges in different areas, we found out that this was a significant inconvenience that one primary marketplace service could not solve.
Which other mobile apps or technology have inspired you?
Sellege was inspired by the inconveniences we experienced in most of the marketplace platforms as college students. Not having a single unified platform to search for different items needed in college, seemingly unsafe transactions, scams, and having to pay for shipments were the issues we felt like existed in many marketplace services. We strongly believe that having a restricted school marketplace could solve most of the problems we experienced in marketplace apps as college students.
Do you have any recommendations or advice for others wanting to create a mobile app?
If you have an idea, don't be afraid to try it out and get your app out for the public!
How did you decide which platforms to release your app on and do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms?
Our app is currently released on both Android and iOS App Store. We strongly felt the need to reach the most students we can, as Sellege is really to help build a safer and stronger community within each institution.
How is your app different than the rest of the market? Which unique need does it fill?
Sellege is different from any other marketplace alternatives that college students have because they can buy and sell and even discuss within a community of students attending the same school. A platform like Sellege provides very trustworthy transactions between students as they are people they see on campus everyday. They do not have to worry about having to meet and being scammed by strangers. All marketplace apps that students currently use are very disorganized as they are simply posted as product by product. However, with Sellege, students can quickly find what they are looking for with filters and specified search features.
