Recently we had an opportunity to speak with Ross Chinni, the UI / UX Designer at Path 36 LLC about Splice

If you could describe your app in ONE word, what would it be and why?

Powerful - We want people to be surprised by what they can do on their mobile phone. When we provide them with simple, yet robust, tools to edit their videos, they discover infinite ways to make their movies awesome - and that's powerful!

What was your main objective or motivation for creating your mobile app?

We had a vision of an extremely simple video editor that wouldn't lack the power of a full featured app. Splice started a long time ago, when photo and video editing wasn't as big as it is today, but we knew it was going to grow through the power of the mobile phone.

What is the coolest or most innovative feature of your app?

One of the most innovative features is our layout for inserting music, sound effects and voice overs into your movies. Audio is one of the most important parts of a movie, and we make it easy and quick to put tracks exactly where you want them, as well as lay multiple tracks on top of each other.

What is your favorite mobile app to date and which have inspired you?

Paper by 53 is one of our most recent favorites. It's another app that shows off the power of a phone that keeps the UI simple.

Do you plan on releasing your app to other platforms as well?

We are exploring the option.

Could you share a challenging factor of the development or marketing process?

In the current landscape of the App Store, we didn't realize how much work goes into just getting your app to show up, so that people see it and download it. There are so many apps out there - it can be a challenge to stand out. In order for people to use and love Splice, they need to know that it's available!

Were there any unexpected surprises post-release of your app?

We could never have expected the huge number of people around the world using our app. We've gotten so many users reaching out to us with great ideas and feedback. The community that has formed around Splice has been a pleasant surprise.

What features do you hope to roll out to your app in the future?

We're planning to roll out the following features for version 3.4 of Splice, along with a number of new filters and transitions:

Splice Video Link – To expand sharing options, users can now share HD quality video through the “Splice Video Link" function. This enhancement will incorporate a unique link that users can share with others via text or email that retains the full resolution of the original video. The link will expire after a 36-hour period, but there is no limitation on how many times a user can create a Splice Video Link.

Video Outro Option – The industry first “video outro" option will allow users to make the end of their videos more customizable with stock videos and photos.

YouTube Seamless Sharing – Splice users can now upload their edited videos directly to their YouTube accounts by syncing their accounts with Splice. This allows users to seamlessly upload their videos to YouTube without leaving the Splice App.
